Technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, breast augmentation is a popular and very common plastic surgery procedure which enhances the breasts, creating a fuller, firmer and more proportionate bust line. Women seek breast augmentation procedures for a variety of reasons, both aesthetic and medical, however the underlying desire is usually to achieve a boost in confidence. Some women are looking to restore breast mass following pregnancy or surgery or to balance out uneven breasts, while others are simply looking to increase the size of small breasts. Breast augmentation may increase breast size by one or more cup sizes.

BREAST AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE

Your breast augmentation surgery will be completed at our dedicated plastic surgery clinic in Westchester, NY. The procedure may be performed with general anesthesia or with local anesthesia and sedation. An average of one to two hours is usually needed to complete the surgery. Incisions may be located in several possible locations including around the areola, in the armpit, or in the crease beneath the breast. Once the incisions are made, the implant is inserted either beneath the chest muscle or above the chest muscle. The implants are made of a silicone shell which is filled with either saline or silicone gel.

BREAST AUGMENTATION RECOVERY

Recovery after breast augmentation will include some swelling and bruising. The swelling may take as much as three to five weeks to subside. Some soreness and discomfort can occur which can be countered with medication, and the breasts may remain sensitive to stimulation for several weeks. Dressings are removed after several days while the stitches are usually removed within seven to ten days. Patients may be required to wear a surgical bra for a period of time. Most breast augmentation patients are back to work and their usual routine within a few days.
